Nightly News for 5/31/2022

Shannon began to take requests for various facilities usage on the last few days of school. If your grade level is in need of an alternative space for an activity please plan ahead. Walking around today I found two doors propped open. Please make sure this does not happen. If your class is out at recess the doors should remain shut and an adult will have to let the student into the building. SUN has ended for the year. Students should not be in the building after school unless they are with an adult. Please let me, and the office know if you are holding any after school events/meetings/etc.  This is primarily for those serving middle school students. Please do not allow students to warm up food items (Cup of Noodles, etc). We have been having issues with this. Today we had two students who determined they got an extra period for lunch because they didn't have enough time to prepare their food during their scheduled lunch time.  Middle School will be running on regular schedule...

Nightly News for May 26th

Tomorrow is Friday and then you all have a three day weekend! Thank you for your presence this week. I again want to thank those who have stepped in for their co workers. It makes a difference.  I realized I did not put this out formally yesterday. The School Board voted on the SEGC proposal on Tuesday. Harrison Park will become a middle school in the fall of 2023. Students from the Hosford Mandarin Immersion Program, Atkinson, Bridger, and Vestal will be joining our current students. Our K-5 students will move as a unit to what is now Creative Science. One amendment was made to the proposal. This amendment does not impact Harrison Park, but allows current Lent students to remain their for one more year until the building fully converts into a all school Spanish Immersion Program. I am working to set up meetings and discussions around what next steps are.  I will be putting out information around end of year packing etc. in the Weekly Forecast. Please note that we will n...

Nightly News for May 24th

Thank you for your time this afternoon. I know it is a lot to bring out at the end of the year, but it is important that we ensure we are sharing information the district has asked us to. I am excited for our work together next year and know challenge brings growth. We are excited to announce that Pepper registration for our 2022 Summer Institute is open. We realize that sometimes registration in Pepper can be difficult to navigate so we are providing you with this resource to hopefully make it a quick and easy process. On that note, I wanted to let you know that people who do not chose to do Summer Institute will be asked to do a one day training on August 25th. This will be district directed PD. Staff members who participated in Summer Institute will remain in the building (in our case off site at McMenamins Edgefield) for PD that is supplemented by the district. I know summer is busy, but I strongly encourage you to take part in the Summer Institute if possible so this time can b...

It was the first nice weekend I have been at home and it was productive.  Members of our ILCT (Instructional Leadership, Climate Team) have been asked if they want to remain on the team for next year or pass the torch. We do have some vacancies. The goal is to get a representative from all building teams/grade bands etc. We would also like at least one PFSP member to be on this team.  If you are interested here are some things to note:   We are planning to have our schedule reflect the following for our meeting times for next year: 1st Wednesday - AM meeting Check In 2nd Wednesday - PM meeting (Paid) Academic/Instructional Focus 3rd Wednesday - AM meetin...

Nightly News for May 19th

Tomorrow is Friday! Thank you for holding steady, I know we all feel a bit like letting go right now.  I only have two meetings on my schedule tomorrow (one in the morning and at 11:00). I am hoping to support as much as possible, but based on the sub situation right now I may be in classrooms. Danelle and Natalie will continue to support students with BSPs, FBAs and Safety Plans, but will not be available for other breaks, etc. Please do not send students to their office.  We received GLOWING supports from PSU folks about our AVID student's behavior and decorum on the field trip today. We know our kids our capable!  As of right now we have five and a half (one is a half day) unfilled positions tomorrow. The district office has been in touch. We can probably make due if we get two of them filled, BUT this means we will be stretched thin for duties and support.  There is a lot of talk in certain parts of the district about a climate walk out tomorrow. We have not hear...

Nightly News for May 18th

With the end of the year fast approaching I will have a new "column" in the Nightly News around end of year "stuff", it will be entitled Wrapping Up.  Shout out to our very own (who we HAVE to share) Kenneth Hamilton:  Congratulations! We’re excited to share that school-based IT POCs in the district have been recognized with a Verizon Innovative Learning School End of Year Award! Andy Covington, Nick Hernandez, Paul Gouveia, and Kenneth Hamilton , are being honored with the " Contributor: IT Leader or School-based IT " in recognition of their outstanding work this school year. They were nominated for this award due to Portland Public School's school-based IT POCs working hand-in-hand with school principals, instructional leaders, and teachers to support the use of technology throughout the curriculum.  A true team of collaborators, they offer timely troubleshooting and device support to staff and students and are actively working to build students...

Nightly News for May 17th

Here is the link that went out earlier today. For clarification this is for PAT members. The contract asks for members to attend and assist two evening events a year. Back to School Night is the first and these four options will be the second.   https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSftebQJR8kxIEXqpji9j9ECYk2o09Skc_pDw64p-xkPb0ddkw/viewform?usp=sf_link We have lost Oscar, one of our night custodians and most likely will not get a replacement this year. We were already done .5 prior to this loss. The standing team will make every effort to get to your rooms. Garbages should be emptied nightly, other cleaning may be spotty.

Nightly News for May 16th

Middle School will be running another test session tomorrow, 5/17. They will be on the modified schedule. We do need adults to be the 2nd in the room. Middle school teachers remove yourself from the document attached if you'll be hosting students who have finished. I'll be in a PLC but, available by text if there are any questions. Reminder - Collect phones at the beginning.  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kVKKshI1imZYtA2pj4o6iYgyZTZBUPOEa3-bQD2AXUU/edit#gid=0  We are currently looking at some longer term solutions for students in our 4th Period Dance Class (10 students) 5th Period Video Tech (9) and 6th Period Dance (11). We have not been able to get a substitute and most likely will be be in this situation for the next two weeks. K-5 teachers if you have a need for some support please let me know. Students could potentially do one on one math support or reading support, help with a small group, etc. We are especially looking at the 12:01-12:51 time frame. They are a...

As we head into the final stretch of the school year it becomes acutely clear many of our interventions have been exhausted and things are just plain complicated. Please continue to follow through with your Tier I classroom interventions and provide structure within you classrooms. It does make a difference. Nightly News for May 12th

I heard it was "lively" today. I was in communication for most of the day and want to thank Tami, Emily and Herk specifically for their work on several difficult situations. I am sure many other people pitched in as well. It was difficult to say at Leadership, but I have several departments and people I needed to check in with in order to advocate for Harrison Park.  I want to thank everyone on staff who have stepped into unfilled sub positions over the last two weeks. We appreciate this. THANK YOU....I can't say that enough.  Tomorrow is Friday the 13th so a few reminders around school climate: There were several situations today, and yesterday, where staff went to get students involved in situations and they were not in their assigned class. If a student arrives in your class without a pass please send them back to the class they are supposed to be in. If you are not aware of where they are supposed to be call the office and let them know. Again, students need to be in...

It was a bittersweet day. Thank you to everyone pitching in so I could be present at what is most likely my son's last  baseball game. 14 years of memories and the opportunity to see him do something he loves.  Based on current climate concerns and sub shortages Emily will not be attending Leadership tomorrow. I will be at Leadership all day and will be available via email and text in the event you need anything that needs to be immediately addressed.  I will be finalizing the building map tomorrow and plan to share it out next week or beginning on Friday. The goal was to try and make as few moves as possible considering the following year.  Mary Watkins asked me about the dates for night events coming up they are as follows:                         May 19th incoming 6th grader Open House @ 6:30                        ...

Nightly News for May 10th

For staff who missed today's Equity PD please take a look at the following. THANK YOU Equity Team for your flexibility.  https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/19lh6019R3q-oFomXfNuQSjpwfVbB_FAtpnsbK4i749Q/edit?usp=sharing As the end of the year approaches it may be a good idea to begin purging paperwork that needs to be shred. To avoid overload at the end of the year a good idea would be to start this process now.  Tomorrow I will be out for my son's last home baseball game....most likely this is it. Theresa is also out tomorrow and Darrel Gilbert will be filling in for her.  We have 8th graders out of the building tomorrow for a visit to McDaniel High School. Conni Brenner, Eva Richey, Anya Hall, Ana Kennedy and Darrel Gilbert will be attending. Students and staff will leave around 9:15/9:30 and return around 11:15. We have asked staff to attend one night event this year so far (Back to School Night). We have offered extended pay for a few events that have come up, but...

Nightly News for May 9th

We will have several contractors and people in the building early tomorrow morning. They will be looking at various things around upcoming work.  Alyssa reached out to teachers directly, but in case you missed it Garden will be cancelled this Wednesday.  For tomorrow's staff meeting we will have Middle School meet @ 3:30 in Mike Benson's room for a short meeting with the architect firm and facilities people. ALL staff will meet at 3:50 in the library. Attached to the Nightly News email is the report that will be presented to the board tomorrow night in regards to the work done by the SEGC. It is about 12 pages long, but provides an extensive overview of the work done over the last 27 months.

Nightly News for May 5th

Darrel's computer has been located. As a reminder please lock doors and belongings up when you leave spaces. Please be sure to enable trackers, tracers, etc. on your devices as this helps with locating items.  Thank you to our office staff for providing breakfast to teachers today! Remember tomorrow is the final day of "Our Teachers are Best BAR NONE". Thatchers @ 3:50. Appetizers will be provided. All staff is welcome to celebrate our teachers. The district has sent out an email in regards to a large increase in requests for substitutes. I am being asked to share:  While emergencies happen, work with your teachers on providing as much notice as possible for any personal leave time.   As a refresher, except in emergencies, personal leave (paid or unpaid) requires one week notice.  Paid personal leave is not authorized for vacation; it is restricted to “unavoidable family business which cannot be attended to outside of the employee’s work hours.”  Up to 3 ...

As I told Mr.Swan I wish we had a side of steak for you! Special thanks to our ladies in Nutrition who baked the potatoes.  I do not recall going over this at the beginning of the year and as the year winds down it is something I am sure will come up.  There is district policy (administrative directive) around the use of movies in classrooms and we do need to abide by it. I also realize we have made some mistakes (Hamilton...yikes) in this area. If you plan on showing a movie in class please let Emily or I know and include the appropriate n...

Nightly News for April 3rd

I found my phone. Extensive searches took place in my car and today it appeared under the seat...  I did not link the notification that went out yesterday in last night's news. Sorry about that. Here is one that will go out to families tonight.  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iY2K8-KYgUwjBxMT-naVAc6rXbGg2jfITW3QPhXuK5k/edit On that note I am hearing from other buildings they are seeing a pretty quick uptick in cases. We have had three confirmed in the last week.  Nutrition services needs at least two weeks in advance for field trip lunch orders. If you have any field trips coming up be sure this detail is covered.  I will be leaving tomorrow a bit after 1:30 for a dentist appointment. I may make it back for the end of the day, but it will be dependent on time.  Did you know Katie Newton is having a baby? Celebrate tomorrow @ 3:30. A  Happy Hour will follow at the Landmark @ 4:30. Questions? Contact Jerri Walker. Testing went swell today. Please be sure...
