Nightly News for May 18th
With the end of the year fast approaching I will have a new "column" in the Nightly News around end of year "stuff", it will be entitled Wrapping Up.
- Shout out to our very own (who we HAVE to share) Kenneth Hamilton: Congratulations! We’re excited to share that school-based IT POCs in the district have been recognized with a Verizon Innovative Learning School End of Year Award! Andy Covington, Nick Hernandez, Paul Gouveia, and Kenneth Hamilton, are being honored with the "Contributor: IT Leader or School-based IT" in recognition of their outstanding work this school year. They were nominated for this award due to Portland Public School's school-based IT POCs working hand-in-hand with school principals, instructional leaders, and teachers to support the use of technology throughout the curriculum. A true team of collaborators, they offer timely troubleshooting and device support to staff and students and are actively working to build students' capacity through Student Tech Teams. Additionally, the School-based ITs rotate to ensure schools have support four days a week goes which above and beyond to ensure an equitable and sustainable approach.
- As of 3:15 today we had six unfilled positions for tomorrow. This does not include staff who do not get coverage. Please be aware support staff will do their best to support as much as possible, but they will also covering duties etc. Calls made to the office should be for unsafe behaviors. Students should not be sent to the office. If you have the need for a student to be removed please call the office first. We will work on dispatching calls based as best as they can. I know all systems are strained right now and everyone is on edge. I ask that we all take a moment and try to put ourselves in others shoes for a moment. If you are not in a classroom imagine how difficult it would be with a dis-regulated student who has depleted every intervention possible and is wearing on your last nerve. Imagine being in the office bombarded with calls from parents and staff while checking kids in, out and trying to dispatch calls. Imagine being a counselor listening to dark and troubling issues day in and day out. Imagine being an EA who is ping ponging back and forth to help support our highest needs students. Each of us are struggling in different ways right now. Let's all take a moment to appreciate someone tom
