Nightly News for January 26th

Whew we survived a rough week. Everyone, seemed a bit out of sorts. I hope tomorrow allows people to take pause and do some resetting.  Thank you Joel and Cami for giving our kids the opportunity to perform last night. Families were excited to see the work classes have been doing. Thank you Brenda, Dan and Danelle for helping with crowd control.  As a reminder the office will be closed (I will have it open when I am in my office) tomorrow. Questions about grades can be emailed to Naima. As a reminder she is out next week. The secure the perimeter today was the result of a report of gunshots in the distance. We felt it was best to be proactive and called everyone in. We connected with Security Services and the Portland Police and they did some checks. They let us know they did not find anything of concern and we went back to business normal.  The fire drill went well. We were in and out in about 9 minutes. There were a few classes with some issues and we will speak t...

Nightly News for January 23rd

My apologies for the tardiness of the Nightly News. I didn't send it before I left at 5:00. My family was headed to the Blazer game and I needed to feed them before they left. I planned on getting to work again after they took off and dozed off for a bit...I am sure you can all relate.  It was a busy day and kids were definitely in their feelings. I felt a general sense of emotion in the halls and saw plenty of kids out and about. There are a few items below to address this, but we do need to get a handle on the number of kids in the hall. As the year progresses this will become a larger issue and we need to nip it in the bud now.   I know many of our students had full weekends celebrating Lunar New Year and several reported situations to trusted adults.  Please continue to hold to your classroom norms and revisit expectations regularly. This is especially true coming back from the weekends.  I am supposed to attend Instructional Rounds tomorrow morning and plan...

To the Year of the Rabbit! I wanted to take a moment to mention that we have several staff members who have had their fair share of loss and life changing events in the past few months. As the building leader I have to ensure I am following privacy protocols around this information. I strive to respect people's wishes in terms of sharing information out. With that being said, ...

I am out of the building tomorrow for Leadership. Jill will be here. Shannon will also be out until approximately 9:30. Naima will be working to ensure subs are set.  Just a reminder that we need to be mindful of allowing people into the building after school. The office closes at 4:00. People coming into the building should be signing in until the office is closed. We often have parents come to pick up kids from basketball practice, and now SUN, using various entries. SUN and Champions parents/guardians should not be allowed through the front doors for pickup. Please send them to the cafeteria doors via outside. Basketball parents should be directed to the gym doors. We have several after school activities taking place and want to ensure safety for all.   We are making serious efforts to wrap up MAP testing. Please be sure to send students to the appropriate session to finish up. Next week is the last week of the term and we definitely don't want to be pulling kids out t...

Nightly News for January 12th

Please be sure to turn in any extended hours or items that need to be addressed by Payroll ASAP.  I realize this may be one of those things we did not directly communicate, but need to. If a student is injured and you witnessed that injury we need to fill out the form that follows. This is not for a small "boo boo", but those that could require medical attention, head injuries (these should ALWAYS be sent to the the health room to be addressed), and those that were caused by building equipment etc.   Kelly documents all visits, but this is separate from our PPS reporting on injuries. We will work on getting a hard copy of this for sub folders as well.  https://www.pps.net/Page/12905 All are welcome to read, but is more focused on K-5. We have not had time to check in on a few things with cadres and other imperative work. We will discuss more in coming PLCs or staff meetings (we don't meet as entire staff for awhile). The district office/school board has stressed the ...

Nightly News for Monday January 9th

I have added a parent coffee this Friday to ensure parents have an in person opportunity to provide input in regards to the Clark opening. Just wanted to communicate that out. Thank you to those who attended this morning.  Cadres are tomorrow. Please be sure you attend as attendance is being taken and administrators are being asked to follow up.  From Kenneth: With MAP testing coming up I just wanted to remind everyone that if you have a student that cannot test due to a resolution issue. It is an easy fix that can be resolved with the following: FIX At the sign in screen press SHIFT + CTRL + Minus  you will see the screen flicker and get smaller. One time should be enough but if your student still has the resolution issue have them try that another time until the resolution error is gone.  **If this doesn't work have the student sign in and ensure the keyboard is set to US. Then try the process above again.*** Middle School End of Semester Dates: 1/27 - gr...

I ask that emails you would typically send to her are sent to me and Jill Bailey (jbailey2@pps.net). We will be working on delineating some of her duties to Dan Carpenter, Theresa, Jill and myself.  On this note, Jill and I will be coming around to middle school Advisory classes tomorrow and Tuesday to introduce students to her. We will also let students know of Ms.Moore's absence. We may receive some additional support in her absence, but for rig...

Nightly News for January 4th

It is with great enthusiasm  I want to welcome Jill Bailey to our Harrison Park team. Jill will be serving as the interim planning principal for the Clark/HP Middle School transition. A retired PPS administrator, she  recently has supported at Beverly Cleary K-8, Kellogg, and Richmond. Prior to retirement Jill spent nine years as principal at Maplewood (feeds into Wilson) and served as a Special Education director. This development was shared with me late yesterday and she arrived this morning! I spent much of the day catching her up on all things HP. We will be working together to determine how to utilize her help and expertise.  I will be working on delegating some of my day to day work to Jill so I can begin to focus on transition work. Emily, Jill and I will work as a team to develop lists of the work that needs to be done to prepare for next year in both schools.  I am EXCITED to get moving on things and am happy to be able to do much of this work on site. I wil...

I hope you all had a well deserved break full of the things you love the most.  Here is a video I found a few days ago and I thought it was worth sharing.
