Nightly News for January 31st

We will have staff meeting tomorrow. Please check your email for specifics around where you will meet etc. I need to touch base with a few people  tomorrow morning before finalizing locations.  Kid Chat documents should be updated. Please have them ready to roll for tomorrow's staff meeting (K-5)  I used my calendar for the Weekly Update and forgot a huge event! This Thursday, February 3rd we will be entertained with a fashion show at lunch to help celebrate Lunar New Year. Sadly, we are unable to hold assemblies and other events, but Ms.Yin came up with this idea and we are going to run with it. I want to thank the DLI team and parents for helping to put this event on. There is no shifts in schedule for the day, but your classes will have entertainment at lunch. I will put out some information about reviewing of expectations on Wednesday to go over with your classes.   Thank you to Theresa and Emily for filling in today. My uncle passed a week or so ago and we ...

I heard about this over the weekend and figured it was a matter of time. The "Chip Challenge" has made it's way to Harrison Park..and it wasn't the middle schoolers! Please be on the lookout for this latest trend. There is one chip in each bag that has a serious Carolina reaper pepper kick. Bottom line is kids can actually vomit when they eat one (our student did). I would not draw a ton of attention to this, but would be keeping your ears and eyes open.   If you have not let Theresa know know when you will be MAP testing please do so ASAP. We have most of you scheduled, but need to hear from a few people.  Access to translation folders will be shut down at midnight on Monday. Please prioritize getting grades/comments done for those students who will need translating.  Theresa and I will not be on campus Friday if you need anything please email, text, or call.  I have meetings in the morning and will be working remotely in the afternoon. For those of you who are thinking of potentially exploring field trips at some point at least one staff member attending should be trained to give students medication. There is a training session this Friday.  Link is below to sign up.  https://healthed-trainings. apps.mesd.k12.or.us/events Yikes it is the end of the month and we have to get our monthly drill in. This month's drill is a Team Response. We will hold this at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon. As a reminder students in the hallways should return to their classrooms and hallways should be clear of everyone who is not responding to the emergency. Teachers should take attendance and have increased situational awareness. For example if the situation is right outside your classroom you would ensure your door was shut and have an appropriate conversation with your students. We will let you know when the drill is complete.  We are welcoming two new staff members this week. Colin Cardwell, will be joining our middle school tea...

Nightly News for January 25th

Emily and I will both be in district level meetings tomorrow afternoon (virtually). My meeting begins at 1:00 and hers begins at 1:30. They both run until 4:30. Tami will be our point person for climate and discipline. Theresa will be able to support as well.   Invites for meetings on the 31st have been sent out. We will send out more information as the week progresses, but this is the only dedicated time you will need to be aware of. PFSP I will send out info later this evening to you, or tomorrow.  Staff may choose to work from home on Friday. PFSP has a full day of training online.  Please note the office will most likely be closed so office staff can take part in their own trainings.  As a reminder if you are having anyone come to the building to present to your class or work with them in some capacity they have to be vaccinated. We are asking you to check with Leah and/or Emily before making arrangements. Additionally, if they are coming for more than a pre...

Middle school teachers please make sure students have filled out the second semester electives form in Google.  To best serve the time and mental health needs of the staff, our equity PD this week will be asynchronous, digital-only, and self-guided. Please log in to the link below, complete the form and submit so that we can record attendance for the meeting. We appreciate all of your work in meeting many diverse and complex needs of our students! https://forms.gle/ wqF1eyWo2fVvfSED8 We are working on our plans for next Monday's collaboration time. The focus will be around climate. In order to prepare we ask that you spend some time prior to the meeting updating your students in our Kid Chat document. Please include and update intervention data. If you have questions about data interventions please seek out Theresa, Lindsay, Ana, Tami, or Leah. I wanted to make sure we shared this out well in advance.    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RfNX0vP...

Nightly News for January 19th

K-95 masks are available in the office if you need them. These are for staff only.  We are currently missing the walkie talkie from the cafeteria. Please return to the front office if you have it.  Middle School Homeroom teachers please make sure you address this email Stacey sent out: Teachers, before any students leave for FLEX time tomorrow,  please have your class fill out  this form  to let us know what electives they would like for 2nd semester.  Their choices are not guaranteed but we will do our best to schedule students in classes they'd like.  Please post the google form to canvas as well for any students who are out.  Thank you!! Next week is  The Great Kindness Challenge !   Here  is a video you can share with your students and  here  is a slideshow that includes books and simple activities to accompany each daily challenge.    I think it's ok to ask students to continue the challenge at ho...

Nightly News for January 18th

Several of you reached out to make sure this was shared with staff. This is a link to request COVID test kits. I sent in for mine!  https://special.usps.com/testkits I failed to put this in the Weekly Forecast, but SUN does not begin until the 24th. They have delayed by a week. We want to welcome Justin from Security Services for the week. He is visiting us from George Middle School while they are in TDL. We hope to have our new hire in place very soon. On that note we are getting a lot of support from the district office in regards to substitutes and unfilled positions. This has been very helpful. Today, I even sent someone home and let the district know to send another person to a building. Things are looking positive for tomorrow.  We were at 69% attendance today (this is the eyeball count we have been doing). Things may be a bit different in Synergy. I am reporting this information daily to my supervisors. We had many students who were able to return today so this in...

Weekly Forecast for January 17th-21st

Monday the 17th No School Martin Luther King Jr. Day Tuesday the 18th No Staff Meeting  Wednesday the 19th Leah @ a virtual district budget meeting  8:30-12 ILCT @ 3:30 Thursday the 20th SEGC Meeting 6-9 Friday the 21st Lunch Duty- Swan, Huff, Manley Schulze Whew it was a long week. I know we all needed a three day weekend. I hope you were able to take advantage of rain free days.  I appreciate feedback on the survey I sent out Friday (thanks Dave for getting that put together in minutes). I shared this with Karl who was headed into a district meeting at 2:00 on Friday to discuss the status of buildings across the district. I shared our attendance rate (roughly 63% on Friday) staff outages and information from the survey. By the way 61% of staff preferred a two day pause. Anyway, I have heard nothing back as of 10:30 Sunday morning. I am keeping my school phone on (I will check it periodically throughout the today and tomorrow) for email and text messages from staff...

Nightly News for January 13th

At least it is not Friday the 13th Payroll is due by 4:00. Please get your paperwork to Shannon as soon as possible.  Please be sure you are discarding, recycling, gifting any of the snacks at the end of the day to avoid vermin. We don't need disease AND vermin. Wow. It was a busy day. We had several confirmed cases and the trend tends to be our larger families are seeing this variant spread quickly through their families. Dr. Omoghbehin (my bosses boss) was in the building for several hours today. She wanted me to share you area all doing a great job and it was very calm (it should be with only 64% of our kids here) and welcoming. I told her you all are amazing.  If I was in charge of the world we would have tomorrow and Tuesday as asynchronous learning days. K-2 students would have some paper packets, 3-8 would have work in Canvas and SeeSaw. We would have five days to see those who are out recuperate and return, those who were exposed in the last day or so would be ap...

Nightly News for January 12th

Special shout outs to our reading team and ESL team for filling in today at the last minute. We had a lot of last minute call outs and changes and needed to think quickly. Way to go team! There will be no snack tomorrow from the kitchen.  We are working through cases as quickly as possible. We did not have any confirmed cases (as of 4:20). Are their more cases out there? Yes, but we did not receive any positive confirmations today. I will clarify we did have a positive case confirmed, but this person had not been in the building two days prior to their symptoms AND their parent kept them home...this is exactly how it is supposed to work. I am not sure if you have received this notification yet, but contract teachers evaluations have been put on hold for this year. I am not gonna lie it freaked me out for a minute because that means next  year we would have close to sixty evaluations to complete. The district and the union will be working to come up with a solution to balancing...

Nightly News for January 11th

Here is the link for today's staff meeting:  https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1o6YO8qrbcDVOzcBJlxAH7dK7_vzVIwQIkyEdhotCjFI/edit?usp=sharing For those people using the "little" playground we are going to stake off the grass area for a bit. It is becoming a mud pit and we want to salvage as much of the grass as possible. Thank you Willa for bringing this to my attention.  In other news I got my first update letter from MESD since before the break...this means they are still happening, albeit late.  Please remember to get seating charts turned in to the office and to highlight/circle students who struggle to wear masks.  We are asking that students refrain from eating in halls, classrooms etc. The exception would be snacks given to the kids from the kitchen or breakfast. This seems to be an area we have loosened up around and we need to keep this in check. Middle School team please do this reminder tomorrow morning during homeroom.

Nightly News for January 10th

Yes we are seeing cases roll in from the weekend. Please keep in mind that when a student has the HLT code this does not necessarily mean they were a positive case. We have many students out right now because someone in their household tested positive, they are not vaccinated and as a result need to remain out of school. In the event of a positive case I will be emailing, texting or talking to you ASAP.  Speaking of HLT. If you see this code and the student shows up for your class please call the office immediately to let us know. The student should report to the office as well. Be mindful of their privacy. District protocols are that IF a a staff member takes a COVID test at school they should be going home. This is an area we have bent the rules around a bit. That being said, we want to ensure we have enough tests for students, as you know they are in short supply. I will be communicating out w/ staff those who have been potentially exposed. In the event you have been options are...

Weekly Forecast for January 10th-14th

Monday the 10th Tuesday the 11th Safety Team Meeting @ 8:00 Staff Meeting @ 3:30  Wednesday the 12th ILCT & Equity @ 7:55 Thursday the 13th Leah & Emily @ Virtual Leadership (1:30-5:00)* SEGC Meeting 6-9 (Can be viewed on YouTube) Friday the 14th Principal's Coffee w/ Chinese Interpretation @ 9:15 Lunch Service - Swan, Huff, Manley, Schulze You know how you read stuff online and one second you totally believe something and then you read something else and you do a complete about face? That is kind of how I am feeling right now. Communication on Thursday night from the district led me to believe there was a very good chance we would be going back to online learning. Emily, Theresa, Dave and I spent part of Friday working on schedules, communications, etc. to prepare for this. Then the district wide admin meeting @ 4:00 kind of sent a different message. My takeaway from that meeting was they will be making decisions building by building.  What that means right now is we ...

Nightly News for January 5th

Good evening! I am slow to getting this out tonight. We have vaccinated 147  people tonight (that was an hour ago) and I saw many of our students. I want to share with you that several district folks have shared our staff is doing a great job and the "vibe" here is really good. I know we have our moments and it is not perfect, but I have to share this with you. I am very proud of your work! When entering an absence into ASEOP please be sure to put a note in the reason/administration section. This is very helpful for Shannon when she is working through reports and time keeping. If you have an appointment, etc. please let us know. The reason is someone may be out for an appointment, but they put sick. Right now this may means we need to follow up with questions etc. in regards to potential COVID cases. This just helps save her time. Thank you. We are reviewing who is trained for medicine distribution, first aid, etc. right now. YIKES. We have some catching up to do. Please be a...
