Interim Superintendent Dr. Sandy Husk will be visiting Harrison Park tomorrow, Monday the 19th around 9:45. She is scheduled to be here for approximately an hour. We are honored to host her. Please about business as usual. We will visit some classrooms and allow her to lead the visit.

I met with several ESL Department members last week and discussed the need for additional support for our Newcomers. We are proposing the possibility of becoming a Newcomer Hub for the district next year. This is a large discussion, and we will absolutely be sharing more information with everyone when we can all be together. Unfortunately, we do not have a staff meeting this week so it will have to wait until next week.

On a related note, I MAY be attending the California Association of Bilingual Educators Conference this week. This was a last-minute decision after we met with the ESL team. I have received conflicting information over the weekend about whether or not I am attending. If I do attend I will be out of the building beginning Tuesday around 1:30 and will be gone for the remainder of the week. In the event I am out, you are in good hands with the support team.

Staffing is not finalized and will not be officially submitted on the 26th. There are still some moving parts and unanswered questions. I am communicating with people as things fall into place but for now, I am not able to finish individual communication. I know it is difficult to wait and appreciate everyone's patience.

  • A special shout out to Kelly and Theresa for holding down the office on Friday. Natalie, Naima and Shannon were all out. We couldn't have done it without their support!
  • is a bit different this week. We went over the shifts at our last staff meeting. Please be sure to check in with your Advisory partners and use one of your PLC periods to prep for this work. Questions about projects can be directed to Coach Carpenter.
  • Gustavo Vaz, our new .50 ESL teacher will begin on Tuesday. Gustavo will be teaching our 8th Grade Newcomers science class and supporting students in several ways. We will be working on determining what this looks like in the next week or so. Welcome, Gustavo!
  • Sharing: My name is Natalie Gardner and I am the Leadership Teacher / Activities Director at McDaniel High School. We are putting on a Formal Dance on March 1st and struggling to find enough adult chaperones. Students had the idea of reaching out to feeder schools to see if any of their former teachers would be willing to help! Would you be able to pass along my email to your staff and ask if anyone would be interested in volunteering at the dance? We need chaperones from 6:45-9:30pm on March 1st here at McDaniel.
  • This Thursday night SUN is holding a family event. From Lilly:  Please join us for Family Activity Night on Thursday, February 22nd! The school has agreed to offer extended pay for teachers to participate in the event. SUN and the Community Partners are hosting this event with the intention of bringing families into the school and creating opportunities for families, community partners, and teachers to build relationships! There will be food and activities! Your presence would be greatly appreciated! If possible, email Lilly, the SUN Manager, to let her know you will attend! Hours for this event are 6:00-7:30.
