Morning Minute for February 1st
- This is not the format I would like to address this, but it something that needs to be centered sooner as opposed to later. Yesterday a staff member shared that a specific group was something that drained them (Team Ukraine). Some of you may have heard me reply that we will definitely need to discuss this. I heard it and was caught off guard. Throughout the evening I continued to think about it. I know my sense of humor is often edgy and at times I can say things and instantly have some regrets. We all do. It is important we call out biased speech and ensure we are not perpetuating it. This punctuates the need for us to continue our equity work and the need for us to establish an Equity Team.
- Tomorrow we will be on the AM assembly schedule (listed below). Students will go to 2nd period. At 10:35 2nd period teachers should escort their class to the assembly. Please note we will not allow classes to enter without their teacher. For those staff with 2nd period prep we ask you to report to the auditorium at 10:39 to support. At the end of the assembly students will return to their lockers or 2nd period class to retrieve belongings and then head to 3rd period. Please have students keep their stuff in class to avoid issues/distractions at the assembly. Please review assembly expectations with students prior to leaving your room.
- Tomorrow we will have district visitors to do some classroom visits for LA and Math classes. The visit will be between 12-2.
- Our Panther Pay has finally arrived from the Printshop. Natalie will be putting some in your boxes. Please feel free to begin handing this out. We will put some information out via Advisory and discuss more at our upcoming assemblys.
- Kelly, our school health assistant, has asked to remind everyone about when a student should be sent to the health room. We are seeing an uptick in students who are being sent because "their stomach hurts" or they need a bandaid. In many situations this is simply a reason for students to leave class. Kelly can take temperatures, offer water, suggest use of the bathroom but can not do much beyond that. She is telling students to go to class first (if they come during passing time) and will wait until after the first ten minutes of class to honor our ten/ten rule (students should not leave class the first and least ten minutes of the period). If you need bandaids please let Naima or Kelly know and we will get you some. Please let Admin know if you have any questions or concerns.
- I sent out an invite for those interested in helping plan for our Black History Month activities. It will be this Friday at 8:30. We will meet in the library. Please note this is optional. If you would like to support please attend!
- This was on the PPS Comms/Social Medias. Thank you for reaching out and sharing your student's learning Ms.Lise: https://www.facebook.com/

- Mo, our PIL Youth Sports Coordinator for McDaniel HS cluster shared an email yesterday. We will be working on utilizing this as a way to motivate our students. Here is what he shared:
My job is to coordinate the PIL Youth sports activities/teams that are made up of student athletes from McDaniel HS feeder Middle School programs (ex. RHMS, Harrison Park, Beaumont….etc.). The Portland Interscholastic League is the athletic league that all Portland High Schools compete in. 8 of the 9 PIL High School’s have Youth programs that compete in 7 sports, over 3 sports seasons, in the PIYouth Sports Program. I’m basically the Athletic Director for the McDaniel Youth Athletics programs.
Part of my job is to monitor the attendance and academic performance of McDaniel Youth student athletes:
This season I was assisted by our new PIL Special Projects Director in putting together reliable attendance and grade reports for our in season PIL Youth Athletes and I have been rolling out our Attendance and Academic accountability programs. You may start having some students checking in with you and asking you to fill out their “grade check” sheet. Here is why:
PILYSP Academic Policy - I have sent a list of students who received one or more Failing and/or equivalent marks to McDaniel Youth Athletic coaches. These student athletes will be considered on academic probation and will be required to get a grade sheet, each week, to each of their teachers and present the sheet to their coach before their next game in order to be eligible to play that evening.
Coaches will present student athletes on AP with a grade sheet at the beginning of each week.
PIL Youth Athletics’ policy is to encourage student athletes to regularly have students check in with their teachers. Grades will not be a barrier to playing. The only thing that will keep a student athlete from competing will be them not presenting their sheet to their coach.
PIL Youth athletes on AP will be reevaluated after the end of the term. PIL Youth Athletes will be put on AP if 2nd quarter grade reports show them having 1 or more Fs and/or equivalent marks.
The sheet is super simple to fill out (Passing/Not Passing) with a section for comments. Coaches will be seeing these directly but I will also receive a copy.
PILYSP Attendance Policy - I am monitoring daily attendance reports and alerting coaches if athletes are not meeting these expectations and alerting parents/guardians that their athlete will not be participating in practice/games that day.
Student-athletes with 2 or more unexcused absences (ex. “A”, “SKP”, LAT) in a day cannot participate in practice and/or competition on the day they are absent from class.
If an athlete cannot make alternative transportation, they can attend practice/game but cannot dress down or participate.
I’ve encouraged parents to make sure if their student athlete has an excused absence, that they are communicating with their school and having it marked as such.
If a student athlete is not at school due to illness, mental health day, they cannot participate in practice and/or games that day.
These expectations and accountability measures are those of PIL Youth Athletics and will be monitored and executed by PIL Youth Athletics coaches and coordinators only. Our goal, first and foremost, is to be in partnership with y’all to keep our student athletes learning and participating in positive environments both in Youth sports and in the classroom!
Please, if you have any questions or wonderings, you can reach out to me either at email (mdavis4@pps.net) and/or my cell 971-400-7382. Thank you for all y’all do and please keep up the great work!
