Please note this is the last three week stint for 4th/5th graders! 3rd grade we will be inviting your students to support the 6/5-6/14.
- We got to most people on Friday with our Italian cream soda cart. I have a list of those we didn't catch and will make an effort to surprise you at some point next week. Our apologies. We actually didn't run out of beverages, but did run out of cups around 2:45.
- Late Friday afternoon a heat index instrument was dropped off by Risk Management. I have been asked to ensure you are all aware of it's location in the building. If you have concerns over the heat inside your room, or other spaces in the building, you can access this instrument to measure the heat index. The instrument is hoed in the bright blue box pictured below. It is located to the right of staff mailboxes and will be hanging on the wall there (I could not figure out how to use the Command hook they sent). If you use it PLEASE return it promptly so others may access it. I have some questions about this and will reach out on Monday for more information. I will share out more information as I get it.

- It will be warm this week in the building. We have a Messenger going out Sunday night and a Remind scheduled for Monday morning to encourage parents to send students in cool clothing (school appropriate) and to send them with water bottles. At this time we are not going to schedule water breaks, but we do encourage you to have a few sprinkled throughout your day. Check in with those around you who use the same fountains etc. to avoid traffic jams at fountains. I think kids should be okay during recesses. We will keep a close eye on students. The custodians will work on opening windows in the morning. Please shut them as soon as you feel it is getting warmer outside. We handed out fans last fall (was it fall...maybe it was last spring...). We purchased a large number at that time and asked that they be labeled with you room number. These should still be located in classrooms if needed. We do not have additional fans to hand out and do not have the general funds to purchase more. For those classes with regularly scheduled recesses in the afternoon please be mindful of students activity levels. If you feel it is too warm you may opt to remain inside (not sure if that will be better).
- As we begin to head into the last month of school it is a good time to remember structure will help ensure we have a positive end of the year. If we begin to let things unravel now it will be a hellacious end of the year. Continue to follow your daily schedule. We can begin to let up a little on June 9th, but until then we really need to hold tight to the hard work we have put in all year to provide stability for students. To that end please remember students should not be sent to other classrooms unless BOTH teachers have communicated clearly with one another in advance. Students who are not meeting (Cs or better) in a class should absolutely not be leaving said class to help out or attend another class.
- I know several grades are planning field trips. A few things to remember as you move through this process:
- Do all paperwork and get approval before collecting money etc.
- Do not assume you can take staff members with you for support. If you want to take an EA, Para, other teachers with you ask prior to putting them in your plan. If this person supports many grade levels/students there is a good chance we will not be able to have them attend. We sometimes can not make this decision until the day of when we see what building coverage for the day looks like.
- Check medical needs/allergies etc. ASAP. This can impact what supports you need. If no one going can administer medication and a student needs it you technically can not go. We can not deny the student the ability to attend a field trip because we are not medically trained. This is why we stress taking this training.
- Parents/guardians have to be background checked to chaperone. This process has been taking a few weeks to go through. Check with Kelly or Naima if you have questions about what parents from your class have been cleared. Trust me nothing makes a parent more upset then telling them at the last minute they can not chaperone. You should have one adult for every ten students. I suggest taking more in certain cases.
- You can not deny the student the right to attend based on behavior or concerns about their behavior. If you have concerns about a student's ability to be behave appropriately on the field trip please discuss with admin, Tara, or Dan. We will work together to find an appropriate course of action.
- If you have students who do not turn in permission forms or who are opting not to attend we ask that you find a place for the students to go while your class is on the field trip. Please be sure to let admin, Naima and Kelly know where they will be while your class is out so we can ensure they are present. I would suggest you proactively put a "what if plan" in place a few days in advance so you are not scrambling the morning of.
- Tuesday's staff meeting will be a short check in/meeting in the library. We will then move to the gyms for an activity our PTA is sponsoring for Teacher Appreciation. Please wear comfortable clothing!
