I hope your nine days off were full of fun, frolic and relaxation. My husband and daughter took off for New York on the Thursday prior to break and as I had to work I remained home (I also wasn't feeling running around NYC would be a break). I enjoyed a few days of very productive peace and quiet at home before they returned. I find Spring Break provides me with time to get things squared away for the end of the year rush. We are down to eleven more weeks until summer...it will fly by.
Please take time to reset your classroom community over the next few days. Take extra time for morning circles and student check ins. Take the needed time to review classroom expectations and practice classroom routines. This time will certainly pay off in the coming weeks. I know it is easy at this time of year to throw in the towel and say, "I can't change things up for this year it is too late." I feel the opposite is true. We can make shifts in the coming weeks to get us through the end of the year on a positive note. Hold to your routines, remain consistent and keep your students focused and working...it will pay off! Finally, below are links to our Behavior Matrix and Climate Handbook. We are asking you to spend some time this week reviewing these documents. I wish we had a staff meeting this week so we could calibrate together, but alas we do not.
- Congratulations to Morgan Novick and her family on the arrival of baby Louis. He arrived on 3/26 weighing in at 8lbs 15 oz! Morgan and Louis are doing well.
- I have several offsite meetings this week. I have noted them in the calendar above and will communicate in the Nightly News as well.
- Prior to the start of the school year we discussed having calming "calming corners". Some people call them soft spaces, peace corners, etc. but the bottom line is all classrooms should have a space identified in their room where students who need some space can go. The PTA and counseling team will be reaching out to provide some tools for these spaces to revamp them a bit. Please be sure your students are aware of where this space is. Since we all will be reviewing expectations with students this week it is a perfect time to ensure this space is set up and ready to go.
- Another competent of classroom climate/management is ensuring everyone has a "Buddy Room" or place to send students who may need some time to compose themselves outside of your room. I want to make it clear this would not be for the student who is highly disruptive, but rather the kid who is starting to ramp up a bit and may just need to reset. It could also be used for the student who may need some space from another student. We will discuss this more in our next staff meeting. We will be asking who you buddy classroom partner is later this week. If you have not set this up or utilized it yet please do so. If you have questions, or need support with this please feel free to reach out to Jill, Emily, Kara, Dan or me.
- I will be sending out invitations to go over expectations in the hallways, bathrooms and cafeteria/recess areas. Middle school will do these during advisory. K-5 will actually go to the identified location and review. Please be aware of when your time is scheduled and arrive on time.
- For reference here is our Behavior Matrix. Please take a moment to review it. We will be using it as we review expectations with students. - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BvJfvBt0UuTVinRftqZhnAqZb0Wyhjg47oO0BVaqq7Q/edit?usp=sharing
- Since we are reveiwing things with students now is a good time for us to review a bit as well. Please take a bit of time to review our Climate Handbook- https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KPqVh_YaA4kA3Q9ilNkbIB4inbGtSGgP-rJhZClRRA0/edit?usp=sharing
- Middle School teachers please note that dance students will attending a dress rehearsal tomorrow during 5th and 6th period. They will have a final run through on Wednesday during 4th period. These are THE ONLY periods they will be out for the week.
- If you haven't completed reading the OAM and TAM this needs to be done prior to the Pepper Courses because when you complete the training there, you will sign off on having the reading done.
Minimum Time Requirements for Pepper Courses (now available in Pepper):
PA1024 (Core - Everyone): 30 min
PA1026 (ELA/Math - Everyone): 16 min
PA1027 (Sci - 5th grade): 5 min
- I know my summer vacation/PD schedule is already booked. For those of you who like to plan here are the dates for Summer Institute:
Summer Institutes are scheduled for teachers (June 20-22 and August 14-16) . Also as we are a CSI school now staff will be expected to attend PD on the following dates: Oct 13, Jan 29 and April 8 (2023-24 school year)
- Please do not send students to the health room to get a mask. The state requirements have changed as of the 1st and they are no longer needed in the health room or anywhere else. If families are opting to wear masks they will need to provide their own.
- This Wednesday dance classes will be doing a run through for their showcase that will take place on Thursday night. K-4 grade teachers can bring their classes to watch the run through. It will begin around 12:20ish and go until 1:00. This is optional. I know 2nd and 3rd grade will not be able to attend as this is their lunch time. Please let me (Leah) know if you plan on attending prior to Wednesday at 12:00.
