I am enjoying the view to my backyard and the snow falling this morning. It is certainly peaceful and relaxing. While I find the weeks leading up to Winter Break fly by, I also know they can be difficult in the classroom. When my kids were younger at this time of year I did my best to make things memorable and magical. We did all the holiday things (Santa visits, Christmas ships, PIR, cookie baking...). The break was a time of relaxation, friends and family. While some of our students will experience these types of things, along with other rich cultural traditions, many of them will not. This is not something we can control, but we can control what happens in the weeks leading up to the break and the response when we return. Keep in mind the kids sense our anticipation and soak it in. This can increase their anxiety. Said anxiety often comes out in behaviors. Hold tight and remain consistent. The Friday before the break is the exception. On this day we create joy for our kids. All students will be able to attend the carnival and I know many of you will have activities planned in your rooms as well. Please remember to hold tight to your routines for the next nine school days. Our kids do best when structure and consistency is in place. Schedules should be followed and all the structures you have put in place will help decrease student behaviors and enhance student learning. It is easy to let things slide a bit because we are all anticipating the 17 days of a well earned vacation. Hold steady and continue to plan for success in your rooms.

  • Welcome to our new SUN Coordinator Lilly Zeitlin. We will introduce Lilly formally at our staff meeting on Tuesday. She officially began on Thursday and is awaiting her PPS email address. She will be located in the SUN office. Our goal is to begin SUN programming in mid January.
  • Thank you to all team members who responded to the Team Response on Friday. Because this was a student crisis we cannot share details. I know it was especially difficult for those involved. Here are the details around a Team Response:
Lockdown Team Response Activate School Emergency Team(SET) Team response is activated when there is a medical emergency or some non threatening incident that requires staff to control movement inside the school.
Students: Immediately return to their classrooms
Teachers: Return to classrooms Take attendance, account for students Increased situational awareness Business as usual inside classroom

We did have a a few staff, and students, who needed to be redirected and reminded of these expectations.
Their team focuses on integrating technology to engage, enhance, and extend learning for all students by offering coaching support for instructional staff.
Teachers are encouraged to connect with any coach on our team (our bios are here), including coaches they’ve worked with previously.
Offerings include: introductions to classroom technology routines, digital citizenship, support with the PPS Digital Toolkit, and coaching for technology integration.
Please reach out to any coach on our website to get started! I would love to be updated if you are using their services.
Here are some of their offerings for this quarter.

  • I will be in the building the entire week. I was supposed to be at a walk through on Wednesday, but have opted to remain in the building. I am anticipating I will be spending a lot of time in our SES classroom as we are without a teacher in the coming weeks. Please note Emily will be out tomorrow at the NCI training.
