Gradual Start Day for Kindergarten

  • It is with a heavy heart I share that one of our student´s, Yasmeen Salim´s (please note corrected spelling),  mother was killed on Saturday morning. This occurred in an apartment complex off of 92nd where many of our families, specifically Somali, live. Naima is staying in contact with families and I have reached out to Student Services to determine supports we can offer to Yasmeen as well as our community. I am meeting with them this evening. I have spoken directly to Yasmeenś teacher from last year and her current teacher. At this time we don´t have too many details and are not knowledgeable about what our students may have seen. I will keep everyone updated on potential needs and ways we can support Yasmeen.
  • Shannon and Naima came in on Saturday to put the office together only to find out they were still completing the floors. Clark, the district project manager, was also onsite to support. They were not able to get moved in and will complete this task tomorrow. Again, we ask for your patience.
  • The good news is our Schoolhouse Supplies order has been located and delivered. The bad news is everything is in boxes. We will be working tomorrow to unpack student supplies and determine how to get these into student hands as soon as possible. I will share out specifics on this tomorrow.
  • Board Member Julia Brim-Edwards reached out to me on Friday in regards to the heat in the building. I did not see this email until 7:00 in the evening and responded. I will admit I expressed concern about being ready to roll on Tuesday due to the construction. I did let her know one teacher reported temps of 96 on Tuesday in their room and I had serious concerns about the rooms on the front side of the building. With the current forecast of 98 on Tuesday I am worried about the heat in the building. The district sent out an email to admin on Friday acknowledging the temps and to make sure we are  keep hydrated and we avoid taking them outside for longer periods of time, etc. I guess we will be in a holding pattern to determine if other measures are taken.
  • I will make every attempt to come around to all rooms from 2:30-4:00 tomorrow to get a solid understanding of heat, needs,  etc.
  • Last week hours were listed from 8-4. As a reminder PAT hours are 7:45-3:30. Tuesday hours are 7:45-5:00. There is no staff meeting this week, or next. Please use this time to focus on your prep/planning. PFSP staff I went over your hours individually.  Please let me know if you have any questions.
  • A reminder that Back to School Night is September 15th. Hours will be 6:00-7:30. This is one of three night events agreed upon in the PAT contract. Generally, we ask for staff to attend two night events, but three are in the agreement. I will be sending out a sign up for other night events in the near future.
  • Please ensure you have filled out this form: Welcome Back Checklist As a reminder, this is where any room needs should be documented.
  • PAT members please send your ECCP to Emily and I by Tuesday morning.
  • Electives for 1st-5th grade will begin on Wednesday. In the event we are not in the building Tuesday (I am hoping for this occurrence) we will begin Thursday.
  • Please wear your new HP t-shirt on the first day of school.
  • I will send out the entrance procedures for the first day of school later this evening or tomorrow. We will be allowing parents in the building until approximately 9:15.
  • One item that I thought of in the middle of the night is lunch service. I will be working on this this evening and will communicate out to those directly impacted ASAP. I will have the schedule in place for the remainder of the year out by next week. I want to work out all the glitches before we send it out.
I am absolutely sure there are going to be many more things I remember to communicate over the course of the day and evening. Please anticipate longer than normal Nightly News posts and emails in the coming days. Also, if you have anything you think I need to communicate out please let me know.
