Nightly News for June 7th
- If you have e-waste, bring it to the SUN area. You will see a couple of pallets piled with old computers. Do not bring it to the tech room.
- This was shared in Teacher Connect. Please note that we have already began working to help support this initiative next year during the 15 minute grade level recess. Coach Schoene and Marchello are being given time to plan over the summer and put together resources for classroom teachers to use during their 15 Structured Movement Break next year. More info to follow in August.
As part of our commitment to student health and wellness and our responsibility to follow through on our requirement to meet the state minutes for Physical Education, K-5 homeroom teachers will be providing students with at least 15 minutes weekly of structured movement during the 2022-23 school year. These additional minutes will be structured in such a way as to comply with OAR 581-022-2263, PE Minutes Requirement.
Currently, students in grades K-5 receive 90 minutes of PE per week with their PE Teacher. The State requires students in grades K-5 to receive 150 minutes of PE per week. In order for the minutes provided outside of general PE to count toward compliance, they must be aligned with Oregon’s PE standards and created/supported by licensed and endorsed PE teachers. We know that many of you already incorporate structured movement breaks throughout your day, this will simply begin to bring some aligned form and function to those activities. K-5 teachers have, for years, found creative ways to incorporate movement breaks (e.g. Go Noodle, movement games, dance parties, yoga breaks, etc) to allow students a physical release in between instructional blocks. The intent of these new resources is to provide teachers with guidance and supports for these breaks so that they align with physical education standards. This additional 15 minutes is not meant to add minutes to your draft schedules, but to be incorporated into existing transition times.
To work toward implementation during the 2022-23, K-5 homeroom teachers are expected to provide at least 15 minutes of structured movement using the PE standard aligned resources that will be provided by the Health-Adapted/PE team on August 1, 2022. The H-A/PE team will provide a robust menu of options ranging from short 5 minute movement breaks to longer 15 min activities. Your building should choose the option that works best for your school.
As the goal for the 2022-23 school year is to learn from the implementation plan the H-A/PE team is seeking teachers interested in piloting two different sets of materials. One pilot option will be using the PPS physical education teacher curated and created lessons. The other pilot will be using BEPA 2.0 kits (30 slots available) created by Oregon State University specifically designed to be used by classroom teachers to implement structured movement. If you are interested in piloting one of the options, please complete this Google Form. Additionally, a K-5 Structured Movement/PE Implementation Steering Committee will be created and tasked with making recommendations for how we become fully compliant in the 2023-24 school year. A communication will be sent out at the beginning of next school year asking for staff to join the committee.
- We received boxes and labels for the recycling of Lucy Calkins-Units of Study to make room for PPS’ new Great Minds: Wit & Wisdom curriculum. Your Principal(s)/Secretaries will be able to guide you as to where these boxes are, they are autolock, so no tape is required. Per your teacher-classroom checklist, please box up your Units of Study and leave them labeled, outside of the classroom. As a commitment to sustainability, these materials will be recycled, rather than disposed of in the trash. We appreciate your support in this. Please let me know if you have any questions. These are located in the lobby right now. Please do not take these at this time. We will distribute them ASAP and come up with a plan for pickup.
