I hope you have all enjoyed the three day weekend on some level. I hunkered down and worked on staffing throughout the weekend.
- I will be reaching out to people individually in regards to assignments for next year. Please know this is one of the most difficult tasks for me personally. It would be easy to look at the positions as simply a slot I fill, but I know each shift or move means potential stress and upheaval in someone's daily life. I also want to ensure as much support as possible for our staff and students. While we did not receive significant cuts, we do have some areas of loss. Please be mindful of discussion with your peers around staffing, etc. My goal is to retain as much of our staff as possible and sometimes this means moving someone into a position that will allow us to keep someone else at Harrison Park. Seniority and licensure drive these decisions as well. If you have any specific questions please reach out.
- There has been an uptick in recess behaviors in general and we are seeing a lot of issues coming from second recesses. Some of this may be may the result of issues that were not resolved from lunch recess, pent up energy, etc. Teachers please be sure to take a minute to check in with the others who are out at your class recess and identify hot spots as well as students who may need additional eyes on them. We may reach out for some feedback on ways to circumvent issues such as having classes go out solo, having one teacher run a specific game/activity, etc. If you have ideas please let Tami or me know. In the meantime the best bet is to follow active supervision techniques. I had this bookmarked from awhile back and thought I would share it (https://www.pbisworld.com/tier-1/active-supervision)/:
- Walk around without a specific pattern or predictable route or routine and scan with your eyes
- Make positive contacts with students while walking around, saying “hi”, “what’s up”, “looking good”, “I like that shirt”, “how was your weekend”, etc
- Reinforce good behaviors by making positive remarks to students about it, for example “I like how you are walking down the hall, good job” or “that was very nice of you to pick up that persons books for them, great job!”
- Correct bad behaviors by approaching the student in a non-threatening and non-imposing manner. State the rule they are breaking, get their acknowledgement that they are breaking the rule, and ask them to correct it
- Give appropriate consequences for bad behavior when appropriate and necessary
- Do not allow students to draw you into battles or fights when you address them, instead, if they try to, tell them you will talk to them later about it or have them go to the office where you can address them one on one and away from other students.
- Make interactions with students brief and to the point and keep moving and scanning
- Theresa sent out information to most PLC groups late last week. Please review the email and be ready to roll!
- I sent out info last week on TNTP in regards to a site visit that will take place. Our visit will be on March 11th. Here is what I know so far:

- Valerie is working on organizing a Sibling Day for the Yearbook. We appreciate her work on this. More info to follow.
- We are moving forward with several Kindergarten Connect events. Our first in person school event will take place on March 8th with an Open House for incoming Kinder families. The district has communicated shifts in current SOPs and we will be adjusting as we receive more information.
- On that topic beginning March 1st it looks like students will no longer be asked to wear masks outside. If anyone has brilliant ideas on how to keep track of masks during recess let me know!
