Nightly News for February 23rd

  • There was some confusion about ESL monitoring forms. Theresa is getting forms out now. We ask that these are returned as quickly as possible. They should not take more than about 2-3 minutes to fill out. We would like to send them off Monday.
  • Next Tuesday the 1st is our FIT Assessment (Fidelity of Implementation through the MTSS office) . There will be a district team coming in for the entire day. They will be visiting some classrooms, interviewing PFSP and instructional staff, parents and students. We just finished up the schedule for this and will provide more details in the Weekly Forecast.
  • Next Tuesday's staff meeting will be allotted for OSAS Testing and Review. Please make sure you have completed the first training for this. We provided a staff meeting for this purpose and it should be completed at this time. The exception would be some K-2 Homeroom Teachers. Please be on the look out for an email from Theresa in regards to this. The last 10 minutes 4:50 will be for PAT.
  • A reminder that if you have not taken the successful school survey please do so.  We are currently at a 46% completion rate for staff. Our goal is 100% of staff input. For those of you who have not completed it look for the email sent to you from Panorama with your link to take it. We did provide staff meeting time for this purpose.
  • Masks will be optional beginning March 1st outdoors. The district is working on the protocols around this and they will be updated on the site. We anticipate kids losing masks at recess. We would love to have input on ways we can address. We do not have endless supplies of masks in the building...start thinking!

  • The following were in Admin Connect and will be shared in Teacher Connect, but I felt they were worth repeating. If you are interested in the Violence Prevention or Dual Language program let me know!

*K-5 VIOLENCE PREVENTION

The PPS Health and Adapted/Physical Education team is excited to announce that the K-5 adoption committee for Violence Prevention has selected two curricula to field test. We are now seeking teachers of all grade levels K-5 to field test one of the materials.

  • All teachers participating in field test for grades K-2 will use the Second Step curriculum.

  • Teachers who field in grades 3-5 will be randomly assigned either the Second Step curriculum or NEST curriculum to ensure we have a representative sample across the district.

Field testing (training and implementation) will take place between March and April 2022. Educators who are interested need to complete this form by March 9, 2022, at 4 PM. Educators will be paid for any extended hours involved in this process. Administrators, if you are interested in having any of your teachers participate, please share this email with them.

EARN YOUR DUAL LANGUAGE SPECIALIZATION TUITION FREE

Portland Public Schools is partnering with Oregon State University to offer our teachers the opportunity to earn their ESOL endorsement or Dual Language Specialization through online courses.

The program, referred to as TEAMS (Teachers Educating All Multilingual Students), is a federally funded U.S. Department of Education grant that covers tuition costs for you to take all graduate-level courses required to earn the ESOL endorsement or Dual Language Specialization.

The program runs from June 2022 to Dec. 2023. You will take one course per academic term online, delivered by OSU Ecampus, a national leader in online education. Application deadline is April 1st.

We encourage you to visit the OSU website to learn how you can take advantage of this unique opportunity to take a leadership role and make a positive difference in the lives of ELs and bilingual students.
