Nightly News- November 2nd

I am having some issues with the Blogger formatting. I apologize for how clunky it is today.  Please see the link in the email in regards to Conference Forms/Folders.

If you have your emergency sub folders/binders done all of this should be included in this, but I wanted to share what was sent out by the district as well:

REMINDERS FOR PREPARING FOR SUBSTITUTE EDUCATORS As you may know, PPS and many other surrounding districts are experiencing a shortage of substitute educators. We are in the process of hiring emergency substitute educators. Setting substitutes up for success in your absence will help us retain them. Below are some reminders for planning for a substitute educator and should be included in your substitute folder or your Guest Teacher CLASSROOM Support Plan. Please share with your teachers. Seating Chart: Please print out a seating chart from Synergy with names and faces of your students. This will help the substitutes keep better track of who’s who and potentially help them get to know students better. The report in Synergy is called STU419 (Section Seating Chart). Classroom Procedures: Please share general rules and the following policies and procedures with your substitute educators: Restroom/hall pass policy Technology policies (smart phones allowed when? Laptops allowed when?) Food/drink policy Classroom supplies/equipment policy Emergency procedures (drills, lock-downs, etc.) Assembly/Extra-duty instructions Attention signals (schoolwide or specific to the class) Individual Student Needs: Most classrooms have students that may require more than just the basics. The names of these students and what they require will help the substitute support them: Students with medical needs (diabetes, asthma, anxiety, etc.) Students who need extra instructional support/scaffolds Students who are allowed to take a “time out”, or leave the class for other reasons Student aides or leaders in the class that may be enlisted to help out Lesson Plans: Please provide clear, concise lesson plans as well as additional work for students in case the substitute gets through the lesson plans before the bell. Be sure that your substitute has access (along with any special instructions, documents, handouts, video, audio, etc.) without needing to use your login. If you are using Canvas, be sure all of your students have access to them in advance. Emergency Lesson Plans: Please make sure you have emergency lesson plans in place. Here are a few sites containing emergency plans/activities to provide if needed: Here are 6-12 ELA - ELD - SS - Instructional Resources Here are supplemental plans created by the AVID team Behavior Expectations in your Absence: Have a conversation with your students regarding how you expect them to behave when you are not there. Informing them their behavior is a reflection of your classroom policies and procedures, and you will ask the substitute to report any issues or concerns that came up in your absence. Thanks for all you are doing to support our students! Shawn Bird, Deputy Superintendent, shbird@pps.net

RUBY BRIDGES WALK TO SCHOOL DAY - NOVEMBER 17TH Get ready to celebrate - Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day (RBWTSD), Wednesday, November 17. This event gives staff the opportunity to talk to students about the civil rights movement and make connections to today’s collective efforts for change. RBWTSD gives children the chance to celebrate Ruby’s courage by walking and rolling to school. A group of 5th graders in San Mateo County started the walk in 2018 after they learned about Ruby Bridges' story. San Mateo County put together a website full of resources including lesson plans, social media templates, and more to make planning your event simple. Register your RBWTSD event here! This event began in 2018 and we're excited to see how it grows in 2021 with the inclusion of schools across Portland. Incentive ordering is now open for RBWTSD. There are two special incentives for this event: Ruby Bridges stickers and informational bookmarks, plus the usual range of incentives including shoelaces, stickers, pencils, and printed materials. Place your order before November 10 to receive them in time for RBWTSD! To help students engage with RBWTSD, ODOT Safe Routes to School created a bingo card that encourages students to learn Ruby Bridges’ story along with walking and rolling in fall weather. Use this card to run events at schools or school districts. For example, you could collect completed bingo cards from students and give them prizes from the incentives you've ordered above or enter them into a raffle for a bigger prize! Have a great Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day! Janis McDonald, Portland Bureau of Transportation, janis.mcdonald@portlandoregon.gov
