Lunch Service- Swan, Jarvis, Hall Manley and Jarvis

This weekend was a soaker! I definitely had to adjust my plans. The week looks pretty wet so be prepared for indoor recess and restless students. It may be a good idea to plan an extra indoor stretch break.

  • New Teacher Support - Theresa will be leading a new teacher group for support in many areas like understanding benefits (credits, leave, etc), grading/conference planning, engagement strategies, and management strategies. If you're interested in joining, email her.
  • Middle School Teachers - If you have announcements for the greater good that you would like to post to Trivory, send them to Dave or Ana. We now have 120 active, daily (not including web-based) users. Thank you Dave for getting this going!
  • I am planning on coming in from 9:45-1:00  on Saturday as I have a SEGC meeting online. I know some people have wanted to come in on the weekends and this Saturday I will be coming in. Please note I am getting my 3rd booster shot on Thursday. I have not had any issues with the first two, but in the event something is different this time this may change. I will communicate out on Friday again about building access. Also, I will need to leave by 1:00 as I have an appointment at 1:30.
  • We finally received labels and test kits for the at home COVID tests. Tests will be delivered to homeroom teachers on Monday (we were still in discussion around middle school and will clarify). Tests MUST be sent home on Monday. Students are to return the kits on Tuesday. Originally, we were told to have students place these in bins upon their arrival to school. Logistically, this would have presented issues in that students would have to dig through backpacks holding up lines and just cause more confusion. We are going to have students turn them in to their homeroom teacher using the same bins tests arrive in. Someone will then come and pick these up from each classroom by 10:00 on Tuesday. Please note some students who turned forms in may not receive a kit this week. Our office staff has to upload forms and then we wait for OHSU to process the information and prepare labels. This can take up to 10 days. If a student, or parent asks, you can refer them to the office or tell them it takes awhile to process.
  • Our PTA will be in tomorrow and is working on a project for the school. They will be in the staff workroom from about 12:30-1:45. They are vaccinated if in the building and do have to track locations they have been in for longer than 15 minutes. I just wanted to let staff know in advance.
  • We spent some time reviewing duties, problem spots (lunch, recess, entrances etc.) and will be working to iron things out this week. One thing we are asking is for teachers to review expectations with students in regards to lunch, recess, hallways, etc. on a regular basis. Please plan on taking some time tomorrow for this purpose. We know that review is necessary especially after a weekend.
  • As mentioned above the week is looking pretty wet. For K-3 teachers please make sure you have filled out this link https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-jyIjIhCgfgTk91bPK7JmYgZ0T-9JqdM1GJiTvuM_UY/edit to let those on duty know what you do and do not want your kids doing in your classrooms on these days. WE WILL MAKE every effort to get the kids outside so be sure to send them to lunch with their coats. Because of this week's forecast I anticipate it may be a lot of back and forth on which grades are out and in. We will try to communicate out as best as possible, but sometimes it is a last second decision.
  • We will be getting K-2 carts out this week. Additionally, we will continue to assess "loose" devices in classrooms to determine building tech needs, etc.
  • This week most groups have Job Alikes, including K-5 who will be attending district math training. We will communicate directly with the middle school team, but everyone else I believe has a place to be. Let me know if you are not aware of your "location".
  • Halloween falls on a Sunday this year (ohhhh next Monday). I waver between sending out messaging to the entire community on costumes. I feel like if we bring it up it opens the gate for people to think we want them to dress up. If we don't say anything we will get a few kids showing up with costumes that may present problems. I am guessing we will have some students dress up on Friday. Per the district's dress code almost anything kids wear would be allowable. We will not allow masks that cover the entire face (this is a ripe for discussion this year), fake weapons, toys, or any kind of costume that is sexual, racial, or drug related. I am open to feedback on this so if you have any shoot it my way. I think if students, or parents ask, you can say, "We are not really encouraging students dressing up, but if they do show up in costume they need to be sure it is something they can learn in all day and won't cause them to be uncomfortable". From admins end if a costume is causing a major distraction we can support in having the student change. Bottom line is I feel like if we don't make a big deal about this say a lot it will probably be some students dressing up. We will discuss more tomorrow and Tuesday, but again send any feedback (leaving a comment here is a great way to do that) my way.
